SANDAKAN.
DAP Sandakan has demanded that the Municipal Council (MPS) take immediate action on an Umno MP under its Building By-Law for erecting an illegal stair-case to his office at a five-storey building in Bandar Beca, along Jalan Leila, Sandakan DAP coordinator Anthony Teo said the MP’s action had resulted in obstructing the frontage of two rows of shophouses.
He said in a statement that failure to do so would confirm that the Council operates on two sets of laws, one for the powerless ordinary people and the other for the rich, powerful and politically well-connected.
“A check with MPS revealed they are aware of the illegal staircase which was built before the building plan was submitted,” Teo said.
He said DAP also wants Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Haji Aman, who is Umno and BN Chief in Sabah, to take disciplinary action against the MP. He said according to MPS insiders, the building plans were submitted in June and in July the same year.
The plans were rejected vide a letter which instructed that the illegal structure be dismantled. ”But his staff challenged MPS to do so if they dare. DAP Sandakan wants to know why no action was taken and whether the MP is above the law,” Teo said.
He said while MPS had been very quick to tear down illegal structures belonging to ordinary folks in Sandakan which invariably caused much hardship to the poor, “it dared not touch the MP”. He said being a MP, the highest body where laws are made, Teo said the former should be upholding the law and not breaking it.
The MP could not be reached for comments.
